Sandwiched between two of the No. 8 LSU baseball team's biggest series of the season, Nicholls State wasn't expected to provide the Tigers with much of a challenge. But in their first road game of the season, the Tigers (16-1) were down by multiple runs for much of the game before a late scoring barrage put them ahead for good in a 12-8 victory against the Colonels (7-8).

LSU running back tries to make impact on baseball team

As he watched the Cotton Bowl unfold and saw Spencer Ware carve a place in LSU’s football future, Tigers baseball coach Paul Mainieri saw plenty to like.
Ware rushed for 102 yards on 10 carries against Texas A&M in LSU’s 41-24 win, setting himself up as a contender for the starting tailback spot in 2011 now that Stevan Ridley has departed early for the NFL draft.
“Every time he touched the ball, I would turn to my son Tommy and say ‘This kid is moving up the baseball depth chart with each carry,’ ” Mainieri said with a grin.

With the "Mad Hatter" Les Miles leading the team it's just a matter of time before the Tigers bring home another BCS trophy.
Perhaps it will happen in 2011.
Some feel the LSU Tigers will be the No. 1 team in the country when the 2011 season starts. We shall see.

The South defeated the North 24-10 in the Senior Bowl on Saturday thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder.
Here's a wrap-up from the Scouts Inc. guys on what former SEC players helped themselves and those who maybe didn't help themselves last week in Mobile, Ala.:
Georgia offensive guard Clint Boling, Alabama offensive tackle/guard James Carpenter, LSU linebacker Kelvin Sheppard and Tennessee tight end Luke Stocker were among the players Todd McShay listed whose draft stock is on the rise coming out of the Senior Bowl. Boling and Stocker exceeded expectations, according to McShay.
LSU place-kicker Josh Jasper demonstrated good accuracy inside 40 yards, but wasn't as consistent on longer field goals. His hang time on kickoffs was good, but he was average to below average with his distance.
