Brett Favre - In My Opinion

Brett, I think it's time for you to hang it up.  This game vs. the New England Patriots is only making things worse for you.  The hits you've taken thus far in this game - including the one just now in the 4th quarter where you had to come out after their #91 took you down for a sack - are jeopardizing your health.  They just aren't worth it.  You're in tremendous pain and being taken to the locker room on the back of a cart right now with a Vikings trainer right there with you.

Think about the rest of your life - 20 years from now [you'll be 61 years old] don't you want to be able to enjoy life with your family - including additional grandchildren you may have?

I know you're a competitive person and have a drive to play, but I think it's time that you retire.  Do so while you will still be able to enjoy life.

You have a record that I dare say will never be broken - consecutive starts #292 and #316 if the playoffs are counted - and next Sunday, November 7th, is the 11th anniversary of your reaching and overtaking the previous record and only adding to it.

Tavaris Jackson had been scheduled to be the starter this season before you decided to return.  Hand over the reins to him and walk away - while you still can....walk, that is.

This is only my opinion and my advice and of course you don't have to take it, but I wanted to offer it as a fan to you.

Thanks for the memories Brett!!

An Update....Friday, October 29, 2010 and Saturday, October 30, 2010

I came in to work; after things settled down, I made known my plan to leave around 8:30 AM and go to my bank and run some other errands since it was payday.  I left and headed down to the bank and took care of my business there - I withdrew cash, turned in my check reorder slip and also got a transaction register.  The teller had said they were out of them, but I mentioned it to someone else as I was leaving and she knew where some were and went and got one for me.

From there I went over to the nearby post office and took care of my business and also got a couple of books of the “Forever” stamps – they didn’t have the Christmas stamps available yet.  I got the “Forever” primarily for use with my Sunday School class newsletters.  I need 3 books of the Christmas stamps when I can get them – according to the USPS they were issued on October 21, 2010.  That was last Thursday, so I don’t know why they don’t have them at the post office yet.  I didn’t even check with my post office – I will inquire on Monday if they’re not too crowded and I have time to wait to reach a clerk.

Upon leaving the post office, I headed out – and went and picked up the photos of Sukiey that I had ordered.  At first the photo clerk couldn’t seem to locate them and I hadn’t thought to bring the e-mail letting me know that they were ready with me.  She finally found them and I took them with me to the front checkout.  I had stopped and looked and got a package of 10x13 envelopes  and a package of 9x12 envelopes that I had a need for.   I opted to get them there as they were available in the quantity that I wanted, while at the office supply I would have to buy a larger quantity.

I also looked at getting the greeting card envelopes, but they only had them in packs of 50 and the cost was $6.47 per box.  I knew that I could buy a box of 100 at the office supply for less than the cost of 2 boxes of 50 there, so that’s why I passed on getting those there.  Once I had everything that I needed there, I checked out.  From there, I made my way over to a Christian store and purchased a copy of The Twelfth Imam by Joel Rosenberg and also got my 2011 wall calendar – Whiskers and Paws.  There was one for eagles, but I decided on going with something different this year.  I went and checked out – and used the 20% off coupon – with no problem since my purchase was over $25.00.  I don’t recall at the present time how much the 20% off amounted to, though.

After getting done at that store, I took a route that allowed me to pass by the house.  I eyeballed it as I rode past.

Then I made my way over to the office supply store.   I went in there and after searching in the labels section, finally found a package of labels that suited me.  I also located the greeting card envelopes and I purchased a package of 100 for over $3 less than what 2 boxes of 50 would’ve cost at the other store.  I was surprised that the difference was that much!

When I left the office supply, I headed back to work.  I got back at 10:15 AM.  When I got back I had to go in the garage.  I took 2 hours of vacation time and then an hour lunch at 11:00 AM.

I made a trip down the street and got lunch and ate there, then returned to work and went and spoke with my boss for a few minutes.  He said that they don’t really know right now when we will be moving.  Then I returned my co-workers both went to lunch.

When I was arriving at home last night I saw a backhoe parked in a nearby yard.  I figured something must be going to happen in that area of the neighborhood.

Other things that I did on Friday were to update my checkbook and to get the bills out in the mail.  I also finished reading a book I had gotten - Before the Dawn by Carolyn Aaersen - before going to bed.

Saturday morning was somewhat chilly.  I think the overnight low hit in the 30s.  I found out what the backhoe was doing nearby - the gas company was going to do some work there.  One of their people saw me getting the newspaper and looking to see what they were doing and came and told me.  He said that if they don't finish today, they'll be back at it tomorrow.  They had a barricade set up to detour traffic around where they were working when I left to come in to work.

We've had the experience of the JSU Homecoming Parade and the Mississippi International Film Festival today.  Things have quieted down after being hectic and busy outside earlier.

This is all I've got for now....

An Update - From Monday....

Monday [10/25] was a somewhat quiet day for me.  The FBCJ Women's Lunch didn't meet because the Mississippi Baptist Convention was meeting there instead.  I made a trip to the post office and picked up the mail, but that was it.

Tuesday [10/26] I had an appointment with my doctor in the afternoon.  He was able to take me early - surprising - and so I was done at a time that was only 1/2 an hour past my actual appointment time.  He did 3 tests and now I'm waiting on the results of those.

I stopped at Wendy's on the way home and got a late lunch/early supper.  Then I came home - it was raining lightly - and pulled in the garage and parked.  I came on in the house and sat down to eat; Rusty started cutting up and carrying on and so I had to get up and go let him inside.  The dog was on target - no sooner did I get him inside and get the door closed back, there was a heavy clap of thunder.  The rain picked up in intensity and we got a nice shower that lasted for some 15-20 minutes.

Later in the day a friend came by and picked me up and we went to our Josephus class - I've already posted about that.

Wednesday [10/27] - it has rained some this morning - lightly and then heavier intensity.  I went over to the post office and picked up the mail - I had a pile waiting plus keys for 2 packages.  I picked those up.  I haven't gone through the pile of mail yet, though.  I also went over to the grocery store and stopped at the pharmacy and turned in prescriptions my doctor wrote - one to be filled, the other two to go on hold.  I asked that they fill the other prescriptions already in the system.  I went on to do a little shopping; I'll stop back by there either on the way to work or on the way home afterward tomorrow and pick them up since I don't need any of them today.

This is all I have for now....

Josephus Class - October 26, 2010

A friend arrived about 7:00 PM to pick me up. We headed off to Grace Bible Church.  Pastor John Ward and a few other people were already there – including a couple named Dale and Miriam from Seattle, WA.  They’re friends with John and his wife, Carole, and came to reciprocate a visit.  They’re staying with John and Carole while they’re in town.

When the class got started, John took us through:

Book IX: From the Death of Ahab to the Captivity of the Ten Tribes
2 Kings Chapters 1-17

I took some notes in my notebook, plus I also marked passages in both Josephus and the Bible.  John took us through other passages of Scripture and showed us that Josephus confirms events recorded in the Bible.

John gave us our homework assignment for the next meeting – January 25, 2011:

Josephus: The Antiquities of the Jews:

Book X:   From the Captivity of the Ten Tribes to the First Year of Cyrus
Book XI:  From the Death of Cyrus to the Death of Alexander the Great
Book XII: From the Death of Alexander the Great to the Death of Judas Maccabeus

The Bible:

2nd Kings Chapters 18-25
1st Chronicles
2nd Chronicles

John said that we should take note of anything that Josephus mentions regarding Pharisees, Romans and the Intertestamental Period [between Malachi and Matthew].  John shared with us that the Hebrew Bible goes from Genesis through 2nd Chronicles.

Josephus:

Book X   =  11chapters
Book XI  =   8 chapters
Book XII  = 11chapters

Bible:

2nd Kings 18-25 =  8 chapters
1st Chronicles =  29 chapters
2nd Chronicles = 36 chapters

This may appear to be a lot of reading – and it is – but we have 3 months to get it done. John went on to tell us that he is going to “map it out” but he wants to be done with Josephus at the end of the June, 2011 class meeting.  Antiquities of the Jews has a total of 20 chapters.  So, right now we’re nearly ½ way there.

En route home, my friend and I talked about the class – we both agree that Josephus just goes on to confirm events in the Bible.  She said she wonders if Josephus ever, as a result of his writing, ever came to faith in Christ before he died.  There is, as far as we know, nothing recorded concerning this.  There is, however, a writing called Testimonium Flavonium in which Josephus seems to attest to Jesus’ existence.

Another Update....

Sunday [October 17, 2010]

I left work and once again had to detour to avoid the Fair traffic.  When I turned the corner onto my street, I found my housemate's daughter was at the house - having returned from her dive trip in Florida.  She was going to spend the night with us and head home Monday morning - or more precisely, head to work.  It's about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive from here.  She was working on cleaning her dive gear when I pulled in the driveway.  I had hit the garage clicker to send the door up as I turned the corner.

I pulled on into the garage and parked my car, then went and unlocked the kitchen door and then went and retrieved my gear from my car and brought it in the house.  I went to see if she needed any help.  No - she finished what she was doing, then moved her van out of the driveway [she was parked on her mother's side] over onto the side of the street.  Then she brought her gear inside.  We were at the table - I was eating, she was checking out the newspaper to see what it had to say about the Bulldogs' win over Florida Saturday night - when her mom came in.

After a few minutes, they left and went out to go get something for supper - they asked me to join them, but I was already in the middle of eating.  I cleaned up behind myself and then went to do some things in my bedroom.  They returned and while my housemate and I discussed something she had learned while at FBCJ for AWANA, her daughter went on to use my bathroom to take a shower and get ready for bed.
She preferred the showerhead in my shower, so that's why she used my bathroom instead of her mother's.

She was exhausted and went on to bed soon after.  Her mom was concerned about her and went to check on her.  She said that she would need to get up at 5:00 AM so she could leave to be at work around 9:00 AM.  Then as we were getting the house closed down for the night, her daughter appeared in the kitchen and told us that there had been a change in her plans.

She had gotten a message from her boss tht she had to be in attendance at a 9:00 AM staff meeting, so that meant that she had to be on the road no later than 5:00 AM.  Instead of getting up at 5:00 AM, she now had to be up at 4:30 AM.  She went back to bed - she said she had set her alarm clock, but her mom went and set hers to make sure that her daughter got up on time.

I had thought I would go on to bed and watch the Sunday Night Football game, but I decided against watching the game and shut off the TV.  I went on to bed and to sleep.

Monday [Ocober 18, 2010]

I stopped at the post office and picked up the mail, then headed down to FBCJ and parked the car in the CLC garage, then went over and waited for the Women's Lunch.  When the doors opened, I was first in line.  I made my way through the food line and made my selections, then stopped at the salad bar upon my exit into the Fellowship Hall.  Finally, I got to the preferred table and after sitting my tray down, went and folded 6 chairs and propped them against the table.  Then I sat down and was almost finished eating when my 6 friends arrived.

We had a nice lunch - with a good speaker and message.  After the lunch was over, I headed home and hung out here the remainder of the day.

Then I was eating supper when my housemate was getting ready to leave to go work out.  She asked me if I would go pick up a new showerhead and showerhead extension arm and install it in her bathroom if she gave me the money.  I said yes, but I didn't remember how much a pair like what a friend and I had put in my bathroom last year would cost.

While she was gone, I retrieved the bag containing the packages my pair had come in - I had kept them so that when my housemate decided she wanted hers changed out, I would know the brand and model name and number of each.  I decided to go on Lowe's website and see if I could locate the items in order to get an idea as to how much they would be so she would know how much money to give me.  I located the showerhead and found out how much it cost, but I couldn't find the showerhead extension arm.  Later on, I called Lowe's and inquired with someone in the plumbing department and learned that they did have the items in stock and got the pricing.  We figured it up and determined how much she needed to give me.

I went on to bed and made a few phone calls; my cell phone went "low battery" and I plugged in the charger as I was finishing up the last call.  I went on to sleep after that.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

I got up about 8:15 AM.  I was at the table eating breakfast and reading the newspaper when my housemate left for work.  I went on to finish up and clean up behind myself.

I took a shower and got dressed, then gathered the card with the information on what I was to get and the cash she had left me and headed to Lowe's.  I got there, went in and got the items without assistance from any employees.  I checked out and returned home.

Then I set to work changing out the showerhead extension arm and showerhead.  I found that I didn't have to change the arm after all.  There was a ball like piece on the end on the existing arm and the water comes out the bottom.  I attempted to remove the ball like piece from the arm and it came off.   When my friend and I had changed the showerhead in my bathroom, we had attempted to remove the piece and couldn't get it off, so that's why we had to change the arm.

Once I got the ball piece off, I went on to attach a strip of thread seal tape to the thread on the arm, then screwed the showerhead onto it and tightened it as tightly as I could.  I tested the showerhead to make sure it was going to work and it did.  Then I cleaned up behind myself in her bathroom.

I called and left her a message about having gotten the showerhead and that it was installed.  She called me back a little later and was surprised but pleased that I had done it so quickly.  I said that it was easier this time around and explained what I meant by that.  I told her that she will have to adjust it - the direction of the spray and the setting that she wants it on [she has 5 to choose from].

I went on to talk to my brother for almost 30 minutes, then got up and grabbed my wallet and went out to pick up something for lunch.  I got it to go and returned home with it and ate and did some work on the computer.

I've also watched the tail end of the NLCS - the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the San Francisco Giants - in SF, California.  Tonight I intend to watch the Texas Rangers vs. New York Yankees.

This is about all I have for now....

McNeese State v. LSU - October 16, 2010 - My Thoughts

All week leading up to the McNeese State v. LSU game, I was reading where Coach Miles was warning the team not to take the Cowboys lightly.

Well, I'm afraid that they did - to begin with.  I think that after a couple of series - specifically after McNeese State scored - first - to take the lead 7-0, that LSU "woke up".  It reminded me of the game with Tulane in the Superdome in the 2007 season where Tulane actually led LSU at halftime, then when they came out to start the second half, LSU took over the game and dominated the Green Wave and won - en route to winning the National Championship under Les Miles.  This is basically what happened then, too.

I think that when they got in the locker room at halftime, they were able to regroup and decided to try to get some pressure on the McNeese State QB.  They succeeded several times - and even got to him to the point of a couple of sacks.

Then Kelvin Sheppard causing a fumble by McNeese State and recovering it for LSU lifted the Tigers.  Additionally, Derek Helton's trick play - pretending he was about to punt the ball and instead, seeing that the McNeese State defense wasn't coming after him, but was instead heading towards their end zone, pulled it down and tucked it and ran - gaining enough yardage to get LSU a first down - that had to buoy the Tigers too.

I saw a couple of instances where the referees blew calls - they penalized us a couple of times where it was questionable; then they "failed to see" an instance of tripping by McNeese State against Terrance Toliver and another instance of pass interference committed by McNeese State.

Okay, LSU won the game 32-10 - by 22 points, when, once again, they should've blown McNeese State out - by 30 or 40 points.  They let McNeese State hang around until almost the end of the game - till the start of the fourth quarter, anyway.

Our remaining games are:

Auburn
Alabama
UL-Monroe
Ole Miss
Arkansas

We do have an open date between Auburn and Alabama.  I consider all of these games to be of the "must win" variety.  The two SEC games that I believe are the most crucial "must win" are Alabama and Ole Miss.  Alabama - in order to beat Nicky Saban and Ole Miss - in order that I can tell the Rebel Black Bears fans around here to shut up!  We must dominate Ole Miss - not win in the final minute of the game - play like we did against Florida, but have the game in hand much earlier - like at the start of the fourth quarter!

LSU is 7-0 and 4-0 SEC.  The Tigers are 7-0 for the first time since 1973.  I'm not sure what their SEC Record in the 1973 season was at this same point in the season.  Obviously they would be undefeated in the SEC, but the question is how many of the first 7 games of the 1973 season had they played against SEC opponents.  I'll have to see if I can find that information out.

Auburn is next week; the game is in Auburn, Alabama  and will be on CBS at 2:30 PM.  One thing's guaranteed about that game:  the Tigers will win - but the question is....which team of Tigers?

We'll see what happens....
