Ryder Cup capt. Corey Pavin's quiet faith

Ryder Cup capt. Corey Pavin's quiet faith

http://www.bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=33768

DALLAS (BP)--As Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin leads the American team in 2010's matches at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, he acknowledges it: "My faith as a Christian is who I am, that's what I do with my life, it's private and personal.

"But that doesn't mean I'm going to be a better captain," Pavin noted. "It doesn't mean you're a better golfer."

Pavin joins a line of former U.S. Ryder Cup captains who are active Christians -- Tom Lehman in 2006 and Paul Azinger, who helped engineer the dramatic U.S. upset at Valhalla Golf Club in 2008. Azinger declined a request prior to the competition to talk about his faith with Baptist Press.

In similar fashion, Pavin said, "If somebody asks about it, then I'll talk about it, but this is the first time you've asked me about my faith. I didn't bring it up."

An Update....

I'm not sure when I last posted an update on my activities, but here's some of what's been going on in my life....

I've managed to watch all 4 of LSU's games on TV and am happy that they're 4-0 and 2-0 [SEC] at this point.  However, I'm not pleased with the play of the team overall.  We seem to have a good and solid defense, but.... they need to work on the penalties.  In the game vs. West Virginia, they committed enough penalties to give up over 100 yards.  This is unacceptable, to say the least!!

Then the Saints managed to lose to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.  Well, at least they did lose to a good team instead of one of the remaining winless teams!  Hopefully they'll bounce back in this week's game vs. the Carolina Panthers.

Monday [9/27] I attended the Women's Luncheon at FBCJ. Dr. Mark Byrd was the speaker and he wrapped up the series he was speaking on with a message on fear.

Then Monday evening a friend of my housemate came by and picked us up and we went out to have dinner with the people who are a part of the Buried Treasures ministry and while we were out there, I took some photos, including a sunset through the trees with the sun reflecting on the pond that they have there.

Dinner was barbecue that had been picked up from a local restaurant along with some sides furnished by some other friends who attended.  Our hosts provided dessert - chocolate brownies topped with vanilla ice cream.  Yummy!

Tuesday [9/28] I had thought I would have a lazy, hang around the house, day prior to going to the Josephus class in the evening.  However, that's not the way it worked out.  I got a call from a friend - she was in the driveway and so I went out to talk with her.

She wanted me to go with her to print some pictures.  I hadn't taken a shower yet, so I took a very quick one and got dressed, then got myself together and we headed off.  We went and printed the pictures - I brought my memory card along and printed some of mine as well - and then we made a stop at an area restaurant and had lunch.

My friend brought me home.  I was having stomach issues; I thought I would have to skip Josephus class even though I had done the "homework" assignment, but finally my stomach settled down.  My housemate went to EE; a friend attending Josephus class came by and picked me up and we went together.

John Ward [Pastor of Grace Bible Church, leader of the Josephus study] went through the reading assignment and lectured and also asked for comments from us and several did speak up.  I took notes regarding John's lecture and when time permits, I will go back over them.

I'm waiting on the e-mail from John in order to be sure, but I believe the "homework" assignment for the October class meeting consists of:

The Antiquities of the Jews

Book IX: From the Death of Ahab to the Captivity of the Ten Tribes

2 Kings 1-25

According to what I heard John say last night, the October 26th meeting will be the last for 2010 and we will pick back up in January, 2011.  He said that we will have a "homework" assignment to be done over the 3 month break; I'm waiting on the e-mail from him to confirm what that reading assignment will be.  He said that we should be able to finish with Josephus sometime in the summer of 2011.

My friend dropped me off and was about to leave when my housemate arrived. She had to wait in the street while my friend backed out of the driveway.  We talked briefly before I headed off to bed.  I did make some phone calls before turning out the lights and going off to sleep.

Today, I've stayed at home all day thus far.  I'm doing laundry; I've got a few other things to do today as well, before returning to work tomorrow.  I'll have a  few errands to do en route to work as well.

This is all I've got for now....

"The Saints aren't giving up on kicker Garrett Hartley. But it became perfectly clear Tuesday that the team's front office and coaches are searching for a stopgap while the young kicker regains his confidence and kicking stroke. The Saints reached an agreement with 46-year-old kicker John Carney on a one-year contract, a league source said Tuesday afternoon. Financial terms were not available, but the deal is thought to be for the veteran's minimum. Although Carney is rejoining the Saints, 24-year-old Hartley remains in the Saints' plans, according to Hartley's agent, Erik Burkhardt. Carney was brought back after Hartley missed a 29-yard field goal in overtime that would have given the"

"As bad as it looked when Martin Prado went down clutching his left hip Monday, the news only got worse on Tuesday. An MRI taken revealed not only had Prado suffered a hip pointer but a torn external oblique muscle as well. So not only will he miss the rest of the season but the postseason, if the Braves make it as the National League wild card team. Doctors determined he will need two months of rest before he even begins rehabilitation. Many consider Prado to be the Braves' most valuable player this season, batting .307 with 15 home runs, a team-high 40 doubles, and 66 RBIs in an All-Star season. When the Braves were struggling at leadoff, Prado took over and hit .322 in the leadoff spot."

BATON ROUGE — He did it.

LSU cornerback/kick returner Patrick Peterson performed a quick Heisman Trophy pose, lifting his leg and pointing his arm out to mimic the award for the nation's best college football player after returning a punt 60 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

The touchdown put LSU up 17-0 over West Virginia with 9:39 to play before halftime after the extra point, but the Tigers were penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration and had to kick off from the 15-yard line instead of the 30.

Peterson said just last week that he has been dreaming about such a moment.

BATON ROUGE -- A 60-yard punt return for a touchdown by LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson  gave the 15th-ranked LSU football team at 17-point lead, and the Tigers defense allowed only 157 yards in a 20-14 win over No. 22 West Virginia on Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium.

LSU's defensive unit was the Tigers' most potent offense, as the Tigers had two takeaways that setup 10 points, blocked 28-yard field goal, had four tackles behind the line of scrimmage and spent most of the game harassing Mountaineers freshman quarterback Gene Smith.

Jarrett Lee strapped on his helmet, warmed up his right arm and, with Saturday night’s 20-14 victory over West Virginia still unsettled, trotted onto the same Tiger Stadium turf where he once heard boos.

This time, the crowd roared.

Another rough spot in starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson’s maligned season opened the door — if only briefly — for his backup to show if he could run the LSU offense.

“We needed a change right there,” LSU coach Les Miles said.

Lee lasted only one possession, handing off twice to Stevan Ridley before completing a 5-yard pass short of a first down. He returned to the sideline as Derek Helton and the punting unit took the field.

One possession later, Jefferson was back under center to run out the clock.

Down rang the boos.

LSU uses defense, special teams in victory over WVU

http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/103810929.html

Smoke and mirrors might not be the solution forever for 15th-ranked LSU, but for one more steamy September night, those elements — in the form of a suffocating defense and game-changing special teams — were again enough.

The Tigers stifled 22nd-ranked West Virginia’s offense to 177 total yards, turned two turnovers into 10 points and got another jolt of lightning from Patrick Peterson to jump in front of the Mountaineers and then hold on for a 20-14 triumph Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

LSU’s offense was again far from a masterpiece with a season-low 230 total yards and only 12 first downs. But Stevan Ridley anchored a powerful second-half rushing performance with 89 of his 116 yards coming after halftime.

And that Tigers’ defense refused to buckle again after the Mountaineers clawed back within 17-14 in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

WVU (3-1) got that close when Geno Smith whipped a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jock Sanders two plays after Jordan Jefferson’s second interception of the game on LSU’s first possession of the third quarter.

If you’ve never seen it, it’s worth going online to watch, even four years later.

First, a young Noel Devine jukes a defender off his feet and splits two more hapless foes before spinning past a fourth.

An Unplanned on Passenger!

I had an unplanned on passenger today when I left to make my way in to work.  I was en route to a stop at the post office and found that a little green lizard was clinging to my driver side windshield wiper.  Then, when I left the post office and got on I-55, he had made his way over to the passenger side wiper and onto the mirror on that side.  He clung onto the mirror while we rolled down I-55 into Downtown.  I made another stop at my banking institution and when I returned to the car, found that he was perched on the passenger window.  He rode with me on to work and into the parking garage.

When I returned to bring my car out of the garage a little while ago, he had gone - I suppose he got tired of waiting for me to return and take him home!  I don't know where he came from to begin with and it surprised me when I saw him on the car as I was leaving this morning.

LSU linebacker Sheppard asserts himself as leader

http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/103599314.html

On veteran LSU defenses the past two seasons, linebacker Kelvin Sheppard left little doubt he was a huge part of whatever success that unit produced.
With veterans around him, many of whom arrived at LSU with him in 2006, Sheppard excelled without taking much of the spotlight.
When the 2009 season ended, Sheppard had a decision to make. He was eligible for the NFL draft and likely would have found a spot high enough on draft boards to wind up somewhere this season.
Instead, the Stone Mountain, Ga., native opted to return and take a place as the veteran leader on a revamped defense where he is surrounded by redshirt and true freshmen.
For some that might seem like a recipe for a step backward as offenses geared up to neutralize Sheppard while his young teammates learned the ropes.
But the opposite has been the case with the 6-foot-3, 240-pound fifth-year senior.
Even though there are new faces all around him, Sheppard is playing at a high level — perhaps as well as he ever has.

First Day of Autumn/Harvest Moon/Jupiter

It has been publicized such that I took note of it and so did my housemate about today being a combination of the First Day of Autumn and the Harvest Moon - the first time this has happened since 1963.  Jupiter is also putting in an appearance as well.

Last night we both saw a brilliant moon shining as we were both out on EV2 visits.  Tonight she took Rusty out for a walk so they could check out the moon.  She came to get me but I was on a phone call with my recently widowed Aunt in Mobile.  She was in a talkative mood, so we were on the call for some 45 minutes or so, I think.

When we hung up, I went out to see what my housemate wanted and realized that she probably wanted to tell me about the moon.  I went out and had a look, then zipped back inside to get my camera - and was delayed by the need to change the batteries.  I did that and about the time I was heading back outside, I met my housemate and Rusty coming back in.  I told her I was going out to see what I could get photo-wise.

I went out and started taking shots but wasn't happy with what I was getting - nothing like the spectacular view I was seeing with just my eyes.  My housemate put Rusty back out in the backyard, then came out and joined me.  I decided that I would try some of the different settings on the camera to try to capture what I was seeing with just my eyes and finally found a setting that did what I was looking for. I got some spectacular shots - 5 altogether - and showed each of them to my housemate.

I got shots with the moon and a little speck to the lower right of it that is Jupiter.  Clouds were moving in in some of the shots, they were clearing in some of them.  I plan to upload the pictures tomorrow and will post some of them when time permits.

Goodnight!

LSU Football: Why The Tiger Defense Will Dominate West Virginia Mountaineers

LSU Football: Why The Tiger Defense Will Dominate West Virginia Mountaineers

This Saturday will see a match up of ranked teams as No. 23 West Virginia travels to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge to take on No. 15 LSU.
The story of this game will be the high-powered offense of West Virginia against the relentless defense of LSU.
The Mountaineers are averaging over 150 yards rushing and 250 yards passing per game.  The LSU defense is tied for third in the nation in sacks with 11 and ninth in interceptions with five.  Overall, the LSU defense has been stout, ranked fifth in the nation.
West Virginia’s offense is undoubtedly good with tons of speed and experience.  However, they have not seen anything remotely close to LSU’s defense this season and will be in for a real surprise when they see linebackers that run like corners and defensive lineman that blow up offensive lineman.
The Tiger defense is built for the SEC and high caliber offenses.  Defensive coordinator JohnChavis is doing a good job, with the exception of the second half of the UNC game, of sending different looks and blitz packages to keep offenses scrambling.
Tiger defensive linemen are living in opposing teams’ backfields and causing mass destruction. Chavis is also not afraid to send a corner or safety blitz on third down and other key moments.

Though Johnson's contributions in the Redskins' first two games - five carries for two yards in limited playing time - were negligible, Johnson's agent said the Redskins told him that the move was made because the Redskins needed a player for the St. Louis game who could contribute on special teams.
