LSU beats Tennessee on last play

LSU beats Tennessee on last play

Tigers prevail 16-14 after chaotic final minute

In a chaotic final minute, it appeared the difference came down to Tennessee being a little more lost in the confusion than LSU.
Stevan Ridley scored on a 1-yard run with no time on the clock, giving No. 12 LSU a 16-14 win over the Volunteers at Tiger Stadium Saturday in a game that only seconds before appeared to be an upset win for Tennessee.
Ridley's plunge -- he barrelled into the chest of Tennessee defense end Corey Miller at the goalline and was turned back only after crossing the plain of the goalline -- came at the end of a strange final minute.
With Tennessee (2-3, 0-2 in the Southeastern Conference) leading 14-10, backup Tigers quarterback Jarrett Lee led LSU from its own 31-yard-line to the Volunteers 2 with 32 seconds left  in the game on a drive where he threw completions to Terrance Toliver to convert on a third-and-13 and a fourth-and-14.
But LSU replaced Lee with starter Jordan Jefferson on second-and-goal at the 2. Jefferson, who came into the game with LSU's goalline offense, kept for a one-yard gain on his first play. The Tigers had no timeouts left, but still tried to shuffle out of a the goalline personnel package into a multiple wide receiver set.
With confusing reigning and the clock ticking down to three seconds, center T-Bob Hebert, in the game for an injured P.J. Lonergan, fired a shotgun snap past Jefferson. It was recovered by Volunteer linebacker Nick Reveiz at the Tennessee 7.
Tennesee players charged the field in celebration and LSU fans booed what looked like a bungled end of the game.
Only it wasn't over.
