Louisiana native Jackson set to show talent vs. LSU

The day after National Signing Day in February 2009, Janzen Jackson entered a Barbe High School conference room carrying a hat in a bag.

Expected to sign with LSU, Jackson instead donned a Tennessee cap, breaking a commitment to the Tigers that began 12 months earlier.

Message boards on LSU-oriented websites exploded with so much resentfulness that some of the sites posted advisories warning fans to keep their comments clean.

A recruiting class that included the likes of Russell Shepard, Rueben Randle and Michael Ford — the best recruiting class in the nation, according to ESPN — suddenly seemed a man short.

Heisman Hopeful

Handed a microphone and instructions on what to say for an ESPN promotional spot, Patrick Peterson didn’t flinch earlier this week. “Hi, I’m Patrick Peterson,” he said in his best made-for-TV voice. “Can I win the Heisman?”

Miles evades QB questions once again

LSU coach Les Miles can only hope that his quarterback — whomever it might be in Saturday’s game against Tennessee — will be as elusive as he was Wednesday when pressed on the most pressing question in Tigertown. Asked after practice whether there had been any change in the division of practice snaps at quarterback between starter Jordan Jefferson and backup Jarrett Lee, Miles said there was no difference.

Campaign under way

First, Patrick Peterson struck the Heisman pose. Now, LSU is striking up at least the start of a media campaign to thrust his name further into the Heisman Trophy race.

LSU ramps up its Heisman Trophy campaign for Peterson

On the day LSU ramped up its Patrick Peterson for Heisman Trophy campaign, the usually affable and media-savvy Tigers cornerback was, of all things, not available for the media.

But it was OK. There were plenty of others around LSU there to talk on behalf of a player who is usually as much a go-to guy for a quote as he is for a big punt return.

And what a punt return he delivered in the 20-14 win over West Virginia Saturday. His 60-yard punt return for a touchdown, his second touchdown return of the season, put him in the race for the Heisman Trophy. He did his part for the publicity campaign by giving the Heisman pose in the end zone, something his coach, Les Miles, is familiar with.

“The last time I saw it live I had a wide smile on my face and I hoped very frankly that that man won the Heisman,” said Miles, who was a Michigan assistant coach when Desmond Howard famously struck his Heisman pose at the end of  a touchdown against Ohio State that probably locked up the award for him in 1991. “I feel the same way (about Peterson).”

While Howard’s Heisman pose touchdown may have wrapped up the award for him, Peterson’s trophy imitation sort of kick-started a serious campaign.
