"Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma was in Philadelphia on Monday for a second opinion on his groin injury, but the Saints are confident that he'll be right back where he's supposed to be -- in the middle of their defense -- come Sept. 9 when they play the Minnesota Vikings in the regular-season opener at the Superdome. "Certainly, he'll be out this week," Coach Sean Payton said of New Orleans' preseason finale at Tennessee on Thursday night. "But I think we're optimistic that he's going to be able to start up practice when we get going Sunday (for) next week. But we're going to have to spend a lot of time here in the next six, seven days with treatment and all the things necessary.""

"Brett Favre had maintenance on his surgically repaired left ankle after Saturday's preseason game with Seattle. The Vikings quarterback told Sports Illustrated's Peter King that he received an injection of lubricant in his ankle. "Like a grease fitting,'' Favre said. Favre gave King details about his latest surgery. The procedure, in late May, was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Florida. Favre said two incisions were made on the top of his left ankle and that "loose bodies" were sucked out. Favre's wife, Deanna, watched as doctors took out what the quarterback described as "a cup full of stuff -- bone and all these other loose bodies." "It's catching up with me, all this stuff,'' Favre"

It’s a little ironic, really, that John Chavis has adopted a battle cry for his defense of loading up the box this season. Because the second-year LSU defensive coordinator isn’t about to let his coaching style be put in a box.

Another Update....

Good evening, I'm trying to see if my home PC will cooperate to try and write another entry.  I left the library and made a stop to pick up something for dinner as I just didn't feel like fixing anything here at home.  I got my order really fast, then came home and had finished eating about the time my housemate came in from work.

I showed her the 40 pictures I had printed and shared with her about how some of the weekend had gone.  She changed clothes and has gone to the fitness club to workout.  I checked my FaceBook account and found that my cousin [bride's mother] had posted some of my pictures from the CD I gave her in an album.  I don't mind that she did this - that's why I gave her the CD in the first place.

Sukiey has been a very "clingy" cat since I've been home.  I have a few more things to attend to so this is all for now....

An Update

It has been several days since I last posted an update.  I have been out of town for several days so that's why I've not posted.  But, I'm back now and am going to try and share a little about what I was doing.

I went home to visit with some family members for a wedding of one of my cousins.  The wedding was on Saturday evening.

It was a beautiful wedding and we estimate that there may have been as many as 500 guests in attendance!  The caterer told my cousin [mother of the bride] that she fed 400 people.  We know that a number of people didn't stay for the reception due to the long line waiting to go through the food line.

I had to be at the church early because all of the family involved in the wedding had to be there early and they didn't want to have to come back and pick me up.  I utilized that time to take pictures - candids - and visit with other family members arriving who weren't involved in the wedding.  I got a number of pictures that I knew the "professional" wouldn't get.  My aunt and I left the reception before it was over; she was exhausted and since I was staying with her, I went with her.  Later, we both realized that what we should've done was have someone bring her home, then have someone else bring me to her house after it was over with - as I missed a number of photo opportunities as a result.  Oh well, we didn't do that.  I did get to look at some of the photos that were taken after we left as someone else posted their pictures on their FaceBook account.

Sunday I went to Wal*Mart in their town with my memory card and printed 40 of the pictures that I took; I also uploaded all that I took during the long weekend [I attended the rehearsal  and then the dinner on Thursday night] onto a CD and gave it to my cousin [the bride's mother] so that she can go through and pick out and print the ones she wants of them.  According to what the upload showed, I took 108 pictures altogether.

I drove home this morning, stopping at the post office, then to pick up my prescriptions and also a few grocery items that I needed in advance of going shopping for that.

I had to come to the library to read e-mail as my home pc was giving me fits.  Thought I would post this quick note before I get kicked off in the next few minutes.  I think this is about all I have for now....

Casillas emerges during camp

Casillas emerges during camp

  • Advocate sportswriter

METAIRIE — It might be strange to think about, but an injury may have played a role in how the New Orleans Saints coaches figure out how they’re going to line up at linebacker this season.
Going into training camp, the Saints were looking for a replacement for four-year starter Scott Fujita on the strong side after Fujita, an unrestricted free agent, signed with the Cleveland Browns in March.
What the coaches didn’t know was their new starting strongside linebacker was already in the lineup — on the weak side in eight-year veteran Scott Shanle.
When Shanle strained his left knee early in camp and missed a week of practice, second-year pro Jonathan Casillas filled in for him during two-a-days.
A couple of days after Shanle returned, the coaches held him out of the preseason opener against the New England Patriots as a precaution and Casillas took advantage with 10 solo tackles and a sack.
“I was just doing my job, to be honest,” said Casillas, who made the 53-man roster in 2009 as an undrafted free agent. “I had some good looks and good opportunities, and I just took advantage of them. That’s just like everybody does on our defense. I just had a lot of numbers in that game.”
One day later, after a review of the game tapes, the Saints shifted Shanle to Fujita’s old spot and penciled Casillas’ name at the top of the depth chart on the weak side.

Meet the Freshmen: James Wright and Jarrett Fobbs

NAME: James Wright
POSITION: WR.
HOMETOWN/HIGH SCHOOL: Belle Chasse/Belle Chasse.
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2, 197.
OF NOTE: Averaged more than 18 yards a catch on 137 grabs over his three-year prep career and reached with 39 TD receptions.
2010 IMPACT: Big and explosive enough to fill in behind Terrence Toliver and Rueben Randle this season, but he’ll have to out-battle classmates Kadron Boone and Armand Williams to get on the field.
IN THE FUTURE: Could team with Boone and Williams to give the Tigers another trio of NFL draft picks by 2013.

NAME: Jarrett Fobbs
POSITION: WR.
HOMETOWN/HIGH SCHOOL: Shreveport/Huntington.
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-11, 185.
OF NOTE: Fobbs produced 39 TDs in high school, scoring on receptions, rushing and twice on kickoffs.
2010 IMPACT: Hasn’t done enough yet in fall camp to surge up the depth chart this season.
IN THE FUTURE: How quickly Fobbs emerges could hinge on how and where the LSU offense utilizes Russell Shepard this season. Similar in size, skills and versatility, Fobbs would be a natural backup at an inside receiver as early as next season.

Williams takes indirect route to LSU

In track and field, Armand Williams won the Class 5A high jump championship in back-to-back seasons. In basketball, he wowed crowds at Slidell High School with dunks so ferocious they could have awakened the neighborhood.
In football, Williams gave his quarterback simple advice.
“Throw it high,” he’d say. “I’ll go get it.”
The hop in his step helped Williams garner a scholarship offer from LSU football coach Les Miles. But away from athletics, Williams cleared obstacles even his 42-inch vertical leap couldn’t match.
Hurricane Katrina rerouted the 6-foot-3, 195-pound wide receiver, demolishing the home in New Orleans East where he grew up. He and his mother landed in Slidell following a brief stop in Nashville, Tenn., but they struggled to discover the life they knew.

A SPECIAL CONCERN
http://www.prosportsdaily.com/comments/a-special-concern-401896.html

"When the Saints opened training camp, one of the expressed themes was improvement, even marginal. There are areas in which every team can get better, Coach Sean Payton declared, and a clear one for New Orleans was kick coverage. Payton's target was certainly a fat one. New Orleans was the best team in the NFL in 2009, but it achieved that level while ranking 29th in kickoff coverage and 32nd -- dead last -- in punt coverage. Halfway through the preseason, that challenge can be labeled as unmet. The Patriots returned a punt 40 yards and a kickoff 52 yards in the first preseason game, and then, as Payton said after the Saints beat the Texans last week while surrendering kickoff returns"

"The story begins, "How about a two dat?" It's a preview on the 2010 Saints that caught my eye, one in which Bruce Marshall, a Las Vegas-based NFL pundit, tells us he could not recall "a more refreshing sporting development" than the storybook journey Sean Payton's football team traveled last season. Marshall said it was accompanied by "a joie de vivre rarely seen in the button-down world of today's NFL, where teams often look and play alike and title winners are frequently rewarded for ruthless and often colorless efficiency." New Orleans, said Marshall, "succeeded without embarrassing itself, absent the shameless self promoters, insufferable egotists and off-field controversies that"

Fear Factor: New Orleans Wants It On Defense

"Gregg Williams isn't backing down. As long as Williams coordinates the defense in New Orleans, his group will play with reckless abandon to the echo of the whistle. If that results in a late hit or roughing the passer penalty here or there, so be it. And he couldn't care less if anyone's feelings -- or ankles -- get bruised in the process. "The goal of every defense is to be respected. and they're respected when they're feared," Williams said Tuesday. Williams' comments were his first since Minnesota Vikings players and coaches last week criticized the Saints for dirty play and taking "cheap shots" against quarterback Brett Favre in the NFC championship game Jan. 24 at the Superdome."

"NFL owners are expected to approve an 18-game schedule beginning in 2012 when they meet Wednesday in Atlanta. But that doesn't mean an expanded regular season immediately will become a done deal. In fact, it would be only the first and easiest of three steps. The other two include working out agreements with broadcasters and the players' union through what promises to be rocky labor negotiations when the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) expires in March. "An 18-game schedule is not going to be easy to put in place," said Steve Hutchinson, Vikings left guard and team union representative. "That's another eighth of a season they're going to be asking us to play. The owners got to do"

Texans Lose Holliday For Season

Texans Lose Holliday For Season

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/7169265.html

"The Texans have lost another draft choice to a season-ending injury. Diminutive return man Trindon Holliday will undergo surgery on his injured left thumb, head coach Gary Kubiak said after Tuesday's practice.

The 5-5 Holliday, taken with Houston's second pick in the sixth round in April, wasn't known to have a problem until he muffed a punt that set up the Saints' second touchdown and also dropped a kickoff in New Orleans Saturday night.
After the game, Kubiak reported that the speedy LSU product had tried to play with a splint on his hand.

"It looks like he's done," Kubiak said. "He's got a torn ligament and can't get it under control, so it has to be fixed."

Holliday had been the only player invited to the scouting combine in February strictly for his return potential, and he ran a 4.34 40-yard dash there.

He averaged 15 yards per punt return for the Tigers last season, best in the SEC and second-best nationally, but his two preseason games with the Texans produced only three returns for a single net yard and the costly fumble.

Holliday did average 28.4 yards over five kickoff returns in the Arizona and New Orleans games.

Tuesday Afternoon Update

Good afternoon!  Jeopardy! has just started on WAPT.  It's my favorite game show.  The College Championship is taking place this week.  I like watching it and sometimes I even know the correct answers, er, questions.

This morning I slept in and got up about the time my housemate was leaving for work.  She was actually already in her car and raising the garage door to back out  and down the driveway when I reached the kitchen.

I went on to prepare and eat breakfast then clean up behind myself.  Once I was done, I went and took a shower and got dressed.  I headed out and went to the post office to check the mail.  Then while still parked at the post office, I walked over to the bank and used the ATM to get some cash out.  I returned to my car, then drove to the gas station to fill up my car.

The gas station was busy even that early in the morning.  I pulled up behind a car and was going to park and wait.  Well, the vehicle in front of that person drove off about that time, vacating the pump ahead of her.  She seemed oblivious that the pump ahead of her was available, so I tapped my horn and got her attention and she pulled forward.  I pulled up to the pump where she had been sitting.  We both pumped our gas; when my pumping was done, I hung the pump handle back up and waited for the receipt, but instead a message in the display told me to see the cashier for the receipt.  I walked over to her booth and got it from her.  I don't know why that was necessary unless the printer in the pump was out of paper.

I bought 9.357 gallons of regular unleaded for $2.299 per gallon.  $21.51 was my total purchase - using my loyalty card - I got a 10 cent per gallon discount. The receipt reflects that I have 197 fuel points that expire on 9/30/10.

Once I received my receipt, I went back to the car, got in and drove away - heading back home.  I raised the garage and pulled in and parked, then lowered the door back down.  I've been at home since.

Jeopardy! is over.  Now I have to find something else to watch on TV - I've settled on the WLBT 4:00 PM Report.  I want to see what's going on in the Jackson area according to Channel 3.

Barbie Bassett says that we're only at 35% humidity even though we're in the 90s and it feels comfortable outside.  She said that she will talk about Hurricane Danielle and what's coming after her.

I suppose that this is all I have for now....

"It's you and me, baby, there ain't nothin' wrong with that." LSU coach Les Miles easily could have borrowed this line from the classic television show "The Jeffersons" when talking to junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson about the 2010 season.
