LSU's keys to victory vs. North Carolina

LSU's keys to victory vs. North Carolina

LSU's keys to victory in tonight's season opener against North Carolina in Atlanta.

Run the ball

The North Carolina defense has been decimated by the loss of at least five starters. Establishing the run is something LSU made a priority in the offseason, because the running game was AWOL in 2009. That will allow the Tigers to be as balanced as they want, but it will also go a long way in establishing the team's identity for the season. Without tight end DeAngelo Peterson, LSU might run more two-tight end sets and try to pound the Tar Heels early with 310-pound tackle Marvin Austin out of the middle. Keep an eye on fullback James Stampley. Supposedly he has improved significantly and now gives LSU a credible lead blocker.

Avoid turnovers

Even without 15 players available, North Carolina still wants to win the game. Turnovers are a great equalizer. The Tar Heels scored 13 non-offensive touchdowns last season. Those were scored by guys such as cornerback Kendric Burney, who won't be there. Also out is end Robert Quinn, who had 11 sacks. The Tigers will let quarterback Jordan Jefferson air it out somewhat to help rebuild his confidence, and he will seek opportunities to be more aggressive. Offensive coordinator Gary Crowton wants to take the cuffs off Jefferson and let him attack more. Buyer beware.

Don't underestimate UNC offense

While the Tar Heel defenders get all the glory, the offense has struggled the past two years. But senior starter T.J. Yates has 31 career starts and could be dangerous if he cures his penchant for interceptions, 15 last season and 37 in his career. The Tar Heels will probably stay conservative and hope to keep the game close while banking on the defense, or what's left of it. Top receiver Greg Little (62 catches in '09) is out. Running backs Ryan Houston and Shaun Draughn combined for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and also will not play. But LSU will have seven new faces in the lineup and will be without starting weakside linebacker Ryan Baker, who is recovering from a broken jaw.
