Mahtook starring for Team USA

Advocate staff report

TOKYO — Mikie Mahtook’s three-run home run in a seven-run fourth inning helped Team USA defeat China 11-0 on Tuesday and remain unbeaten in the V FISU World University baseball championships.
The victory advances the U.S. National baseball team to today’s semifinals against the winner of the Taipei-Japan game held later Tuesday. The time for the semifinal was undetermined Tuesday evening.
Mahtook was one of 11 batters the United States sent to the plate in the big inning that helped the U.S. defeat China in seven innings.
The right fielder, who just completed his sophomore season at LSU, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
His performance was his second big outing during the tournament. Mahtook had a double, triple and three RBIs in the U.S. team’s 15-0, five-inning win over Sri Lanka on Friday.
Mahtook is 6-for-12 with seven runs scored in the tournament, starting in right field during all four of the U.S. wins. He was 1-for-4 with three walks and three runs scored in Sunday’s 11-inning, 8-7 win over Taipai and went hitless in the team’s 8-1 victory over Canada on Tuesday.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
