One of the top targets on LSU’s recruiting board, Tampa quarterback Phillip Ely, will announce his college choice at 4 p.m. CDT Wednesday, Plant High School coach Robert Weiner said.
Weiner said he and Ely hadn’t discussed any “finalists,” but the coach said LSU is in good position.
“He loved LSU when he went there,” Weiner said of Ely, who visited the campus this summer. “No head coach spent the amount of time with him that coach Les Miles did, and he really liked the situation there.”
Ely’s announcement Wednesday will be at Plant, with offensive lineman Tony Posada also expected to reveal his college choice.
Ely, 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, is 19-0 as a starter after leading Plant to its third state championship in four years. He was in Aliso Viejo, Calif., last month to participate in the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback camp.
Considered the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com, Ely follows Purdue’s Robert Marve and Georgia’s Aaron Murray as Plant signal-callers. He carries offers from schools such as Clemson, Ole Miss, Arizona State and Vanderbilt, as well as LSU.
Last week, Athens, Ala., quarterback Stephen Rivers gave the Tigers his commitment. Weiner said that shouldn’t affect LSU’s standing with Ely.
