METAIRIE — New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said Saturday that the competition to replace Scott Fujita at strongside linebacker could last well beyond the end of training camp.
Fujita, who played in most of the Saints’ defensive packages a year ago, signed with Cleveland as a free agent during the offseason. Several candidates — Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Troy Evans, Clint Ingram and Stanley Arnoux — are vying to replace him.
Just as the Saints used Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, and Mike Bell in combination to replace Deuce McAllister at halfback a year ago, they could use a committee approach at strongside linebacker.
“There’s no frontrunner right now,’’ Williams said between training camp practices. “In fact, there may not be a frontrunner the entire season. One of the things that we have talked about as a staff is Scott Fujita was unique in that he was adaptable in so many different packages.
