This one was more a letdown

ATLANTA — The closing scene of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game looked like the completion of a season-opening showdown.
A sea of Carolina blue on one side of the Georgia Dome fell quiet. All the purple and gold on the other side erupted, celebrating a victory that went from rout to thriller in a frantic fourth quarter.
But even with the pageantry of this annual starting point for ranked teams, the stage of an NFL venue and the excitement of a photo finish, No. 21 LSU’s 30-24 win over No. 18 North Carolina was more a letdown than a showdown.
The way they failed to put UNC away late, it felt like the Tigers were back at Mississippi State for last year’s nail-biter, defending their goal line to defeat an opponent with inferior talent.
Had the Tar Heels been at full strength, who knows how Saturday would have unfolded.
