New Orleans Pro Football at 50: Ex-LSU star Cannon brings in the multitudes

On August 18, 1962, professional football made its return to City Park Stadium for an 8 p.m. kickoff between the AFL’s Houston Oilers (coached by Pop Ivy) & Boston Patriots (coached by Mike Holovak).

Some local names participating included ex-Tulane Green Wave lineman Tony Sardisco for Boston and LSU legend Billy Cannon for Houston.  The former Heisman Trophy winning Cannon was the reason for the overflow crowd that night as the anticipated 20,000 fans turned into some 31,000, shattering the previous AFL record for an exhibition game of 18,000.  The game grossed some $89,000.
